Hey, hot take, but if a company decides they no longer want to distribute a piece of media they own the rights to, then they should be legally required to sign the rights back over to the creator.

They shouldn't be allowed to just sit on the IP for the rest of time, especially if they have no intention of ever releasing it again.

werewolf-cuddles

#i thought this was gonna say “then they shouldn't be allowed to punish piracy of it”

You know what, that's also a valid take, let's add that to the post

kyraneko

In computer gaming there's a concept called Abandonware that runs on this premise. That if the company isn't making it and selling it anymore, it's acceptable to copy/download/pirate it.

Applied in a wider sense, if there's no way for you to access it legally, then illegally is fuckin' fine.

But yes, if the owner isn't using it they ought to be obligated to make it available to someone who will.

Shout-out to girlies who don't use any product on their horns and talons. "Yeah I only use a buffing wax and a gentle calcite oil, plus screener if I'm going to be in the sun" no, fuck that. This is about people who let the water stains stick and aren't afraid of fading. The obsession with looking like you're still in your 100s is so toxic and like. Who cares if you're 340 and one horn is slightly darker than the other. Gore anyone who gives you shit about it

That post about 30 year old coming of age stories?

I’ve been thinking about it all morning. What would the plot points be for that? What makes a 30 year old coming of age story?

Old folks sound off in the comments

biglawbear

This article about a woman who went on a life changing lesbian cruise.

Rather than beginnings like teenage coming of age stories, a 30's coming of age is about change.

The thing about turning 30 is that you know yourself better, and you are usually just starting to have the means to seek what you want. You have enough life experience to know what you like and don't like. You may have a little disposable income, freedom from family, or finally be treating something like depression.

It isn't like being a teenager where the coming of age is new experiences; it's coming of age in knowing what you want and changing your circumstances. You look around and think, "I want and deserve better than this, and I can do it," and you make the change.

Getting a new job. Going back to school. Dating someone new. Moving somewhere else. Going on a long trip. Trying a new hobby. Or even just dressing differently! There's so many ways this coming of age can occur.

But there are layers to this. Unlike a teenage growing up story where you're writing on a blank slate, a 30's coming of age is turning the page. You might have to do something painful. Quit your job. Break up with someone. Say goodbye to your hometown. There's change. And with that, comes apprehension for the future and grief over the past, but you work through that anyway to seek something better for yourself.

To quote the article above, one of my favorite quotes of all time: "There’s something so deliriously pleasurable in the idea of trusting myself enough to know exactly what I want.”

Oh and by the way. This doesn't just have to be the plot of a book or fic. This can be your life, too. You can always do better.

Getting older isn't bad. Turning 30 isn't the end of your life. Things can be better once you know yourself more and know what you want. Embrace it.

kattahj

When I was thirty I got my first steady full-time job (after years working part-time and substitute) and moved to a new town 40 km from my old one, so that felt like a coming of age!

tackedtothewall

Sooo much happened in my 30s.

If you were thinking about writing one of these, look at all the people who are just getting diagnosed with Autism or ADHD in their 30s. A lot of women or AFAB people, a lot of people of color - folks who didn’t fit the diagnostic criteria as practiced/written in the 1990s and early 2000s. I also have some friends who had gender epiphanies in their 30s.

Make it a fantasy novel, where someone’s magic or mutant powers manifest not in puberty but in perimenopause or at least not until they turn 30 (or 31, 33, 35, whatever). So you’re learning to deal with these new aspects of your life not in high school but in a period when you maybe have a kid, or your friends have kids. You have a job (or three), you’re trying to decide if it’s worthwhile to buy a house or keep renting.

Anonymous asked:

I just don’t think Meghan has a leg here. She is a princess, no one wants to hear from her on strikes.

thesussexroyals answered:

Meghan was a working actress for decades. She was a working royal for 18 months. She benefits massively from her show reaching syndication. She stands to lose depending on how Netflix negotiated residuals for Suits with it being out of cable reruns now.

Meghan knows what it’s like to scrimp and scrap for years. She was a working actress doing bit parts her whole 20s!

The fact is that honestly if she didn’t marry Harry, Suits might have been her biggest hit and again residuals would have a huge impact on her. She completely has a leg to stand on joining this fight. Just like she had one speaking up for BLM.

In fact, A-Listers NEED to be using their spotlight to highlight the strike and the working actors who make up the bulk of Hollywood who don’t make millions per movie. It’s important that people like Meryl Streep or Jennifer Lawrence or Matt Damon or Margot Robbie join the strike. A-list talent walking off set and refusing to take part in press and promo is part of what gives the Union huge bargaining power even if those elite actors are not necessarily hurting financially. But also, a lot of A-Listers also have huge stakes in the fight because it’s also about control of their image and their long term financial profit, too.

Meghan is a producer now with a new production company. If she wants top talent on her productions she needs to be ten toes down in solidarity, too.

Meghan was/is SAG. The Union protected her as a working actress, she can use the outrageous spotlight on her to stand in solidarity and to support working actors.

A lot of people don't seem to know that a bunch of older stars end up in poverty. Fame is fleeting. The glamorous role often doesn't pay as well as you think.

Tales of Angela Landsbury insisting ageing stars get roles on Murder She Wrote so they could retain their medical insurance.

Every worker needs unions. Bit-part workers need A-lister solidarity. Being an A-lister doesn't last forever.

derinthescarletpescatarian

Also it's incredibly weird to be like "the most powerful bargaining chips shouldn't get involved". Like what is the logic there. The point of a union is that everyone stands up for each other. Why would you not want influential voices and in-demand service providers being on strike and talking about it. It's like if a bunch of soldiers show up to defend a town and people are like "no, they moved away from that town for a while so they shouldn't be on the front lines, they should go away and let the town fend for itself". I do not understand the 'too rich and famous to strike' logic at all.

aqueerkettleofish

Sadly, there is a large part of the human race that thinks the goal of life is "amass enough money and power to stop getting fucked and start doing the fucking", and they can't wrap their mind around the concept of someone who isn't getting fucked anymore* caring about the people who are still getting fucked.

*as if Disney didn't deliberately and flagrantly violate their contract with ScarJo. Or Robin Williams, at the height of his career, for that matter. A-listers have stakes in this fight worth millions, and yes, they earned that money.

derinthescarletpescatarian

Even if success did make someone not care about fairness in their industry I don't see why that would matter. Boots on ground is boots on ground. We want practical achievement in securing fair pay and treatment, not a sincerity contest.

Between Ryan Gosling Ken and Benoit Blanc I'm starting to think that it's some sort of animal abuse to keep casting big name actors in stoic macho manly man rolls instead of giving them goofy little guys to play. Like look at them their coats are shiny, they seem so much more lively and energetic. We need to make sure all actors have enough goofy little guys to play before peta gets involved.

Watching John Hamm play Jim (short for James, which is short for Gabriel) in Good Omens season 2 fits the theory here, too, he seems to be having a blast.
